Reports of the first clashes in Hyderabad because of the Danish Cartoons have just begun circulating in office and the non-Hyderabadi’s have began jumping the gun as to how unsafe the city is?
Its 4.30pm, 3hrs after the Friday prayers and the arguments have began as to how the instigation came from a particular fundamentalist party about a particular sect’s lack of initiative about people maligning their faith. How do these things even begin? Who has the imagination to start these rumors?
Schooling was the time when curfews were far too many and from the time Mr. Naidu came to power, especially in his tenure, there was not a single skirmish. It also helps that one of the first thing that he did after assuming power was to warn the first family of the old city to put an end to instigation otherwise none in the family would exist. Now, that’s some leadership.
The Nehru founded party, riding high on secular ideals (can some-one define secular for me?), in power right now has given a free hand to every party loyal to form his own fiefdom’s and run the area through his/her(!!!) whims. And this is really destroying the image of my city for every out-sider who is here as a guest and making an honest living and most of who vouch for the great city.
I am just out of an argument with some non-locals, who have jumped the gun in branding the city as one on a slow burner simmering all the time and ready to burst. And it’s nothing but crap. The media is to be blamed for their over-enthusiastic journalism, especially the Hyderabadi press that has been lying dormant mainly due to the lack of communal clashes for more than a decade. The news flashes have just begun and live coverage with the same footage of a police lathi-charge is also making rounds.
My dad travels regularly to the old city and even today he was there when the incident took place and he just shrugged it off saying that it was nothing more than an over-emotional group protesting the cartoons. Yes they have a right to do it, but please don’t say that they are destroying the moral and religious fabric of the city.
There is a palpable tension here; most glued to the television in the cafeteria and a few true-blooded hyderabadi’s have already started muttering about how bad an image this will set to the software industry which is just booming.
It’s all too pre-mature, all too dicey as to what’s actually happening but certainly has got me all worked up. It sucks when people come to conclusions by what some mindless jerks do about something half a world away. I know it’s touchy but it really sucks when you hear such off the cuff remarks based on such freaky incidents.
Peace in our time…
